Childhood and Cinema
Since its inception the world of cinema has embraced the image of the child and both extended and challenged its representations. Vicky Lebeau explores the complex and ongoing adventure of childhood on screen and examines how the child in film has been used to embody the aspirations and anxieties of modern life. Moving from early to contemporary cinema – a process that includes discussions of films such as Victorian ‘Child Pictures’, The Spirit of the Beehive, L’Enfant sauvage, 400 Blows, Lolita, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, Tarnationand The Woodsman– she uncovers the compulsion of film-makers to visualize the child and their need to use childhood as a way of reflecting on sexuality, language, death and difference. By bringing together childhood and cinema as two institutions of modern culture, this book ultimately uses the figure of the child – as image, as narrative, and as myth – to reflect on the form and significance of cinema itself. Thought-provoking and engaging, Childhood and Cinemais an original and challenging contribution to studies in childhood and visual culture that will be of interest to readers in the fields of literature, film and cultural studies.
Psychoanalysis and Cinema
Lebeau examines the long and uneven history of developments in modern art, science, and technology that brought pychoanalysis and the cinema together towards the end of the nineteenth century. She explores the subsequent encounters between the two: the seductions of psychoanalysis and cinema as converging, though distinct, ways of talking about dream and desire, image and illusion, shock, and sexuality. Beginning with Freud's encounter with the spectacle of hysteria on display in fin-de-siècle Paris, this study offers a detailed reading of the texts and concepts which generated the field of psychoanalytic film theory.
Re-reading Freud's writing on femininity, fantasy and social identification, Lost Angels expands the psychoanalytic framework within which contemporary debates regarding fantasy and spectatorship have been taking place. Vicky Lebeau takes Freud's preoccupation with femininity and feminine fantasy as her starting point and goes on to explore his differentiation between masculine and feminine forms of fantasy through feminist and critical theories of spectatorship and cinema. Investigating how psychoanalysis explains fantasy as a form of preoccupation which cuts across both 'private' and 'public' forms of fantasy, Lebeau links discussion of the female spectator with the so-called 'malaise' of today's mass culture through her close readings of three key 'youth' films of the 1980's - John Hughes' Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Francis Coppola's Rumble Fish and Tim Hunter's River's Edge. Lost Angels is a ground-breading addition to current feminist film theory and essential reading for all students of film.

The Story of the Salem Witch Trials
Between June 10 and September 22, 1692, nineteen people were hanged for practicing witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts. One person was pressed to death, and over 150 others were jailed, where still others died. The Story of the Salem Witch Trials is a history of that event. It provides a much needed synthesis of the most recent scholarship on the subject, places the trials into the context of the Great European Witch-Hunt, and relates the events of 1692 to witch-hunting throughout seventeenth century New England. This complex and difficult subject is covered in a uniquely accessible manner that captures all the drama that surrounded the Salem witch trials. From beginning to end, the reader is carried along by the author’s powerful narration and mastery of the subject. While covering the subject in impressive detail, Bryan Le Beau maintains a broad perspective on events, and wherever possible, lets the historical characters speak for themselves. Le Beau highlights the decisions made by individuals responsible for the trials that helped turn what might have been a minor event into a crisis that has held the imagination of students of American history.
Awakening the Fire Within
This book integrates psychological, spiritual and pragmatic approaches to the mastery of life. It focuses on relationship, leadership and self-esteem. We know that what motivates our thoughts, feelings, words and actions is less than 10% at the level of the conscious mind. The driving forces in our lives do not exist at the surface of our minds, where we make our every day, 'conscious' decisions. What truly moves us lies buried deep within and we must become familiar with that shadowy underworld from where our real choices and actions are being motivated. In order to get into our personal 'underworld', where the real work must be done, we must go far beyond intellectualism, positive thinking, and 're-programming'. We have found that the practices of yoga, ranging from breathwork and postures to meditation and self-enquiry, are the most effective means of diving deep within the unconscious. As we follow the paths of yoga to the depths of the ocean of our own existence, we inevitably encounter the many shadowy forms of the unconscious lurking below the surface. It is by encountering, embracing and then releasing these submerged thought-forms and undigested feelings and sensations, that we will ultimately attain our 'pearl of great price', Self-realization. This book emphasizes the use of the breath as a potent means for exploring and clearing the unconscious. When integrated with an ability to recognize and understand how our negative, self-defeating 'patterns' operate, progress can be remarkably rapid and enduring. Finally, particular attention is given to the use of 'action' as a means to self-knowledge, self-healing and self-transformation. It is in the heat of action that we actually discover how we are put together and identify where we are weak and where we are strong. Breaking through our resignation and stepping out onto the playing field of life is accomplished in the field of action, where leadership resides.
