Drawing on the lives of some of the greatest political, intellectual and religious leaders of modern times, and the author’s personal experience, Virtuous Leadership demonstrates that leadership and virtue are not only compatible, they are actually synonymous. Virtuous Leadership defines each of the classical human virtues most essential to leadership – magnanimity, humility, prudence, courage, self-control and justice. It demonstrates how these virtues promote personal transformation and the attainment of self-fulfillment. It also considers the Christian supernatural virtues of faith, hope and charity without which no study of leadership can be complete. The book’s final section, Towards Victory, offers a methodology for the achievement of interior growth tailored to the needs of busy, professional people intent on imbuing their lives with a transcendent purpose. Thus, the aim of Virtuous Leadership is ultimately practical. It is meant to be your guidebook in the quest for excellence.
In this book the distinguished novelist Tim Parks presents reading a novel as an exciting and dangerous meeting with another person. For the novelist, writing the book is part of life, a card played in the long psychological game of dealing with the world. For readers, their reaction to a work of fiction is likewise part of life as we seek a structure or strategy of understanding for ourselves. Engaged with numerous great novels and with focused discussion ofJames Joyce, Thomas Hardy, Charles Dickens. D. H. Lawrence, and J.M. Coetzee, The Novel: A Survival Skill gets much closer to the real experience of reading and writing, the mysteries of our positiveand negative responses, than traditional literary criticism. Parks also devotes some time to exploring his own writing in the light of the arguments he is putting forward. The result is a compelling, risk-taking account of what is at stake in the lived experience of writing and of reading. The book also suggests why so much literary criticism seems entirely arcane and irrelevant to the 'ordinary' reader.

International Security is a cutting-edge analysis of the key security challenges and developments in the post-Cold War world. Drawing on a wide range of contemporary examples, from the Iraq war to the rise of China, it is an essential guide for students and policy makers seeking to understand the theoretical and empirical debates over the fast-changing nature of international security today. The book is organized into four main parts. Part 1 provides an analytical framework for the book, identifying the most significant post-Cold War shifts in international security and recent theoretical developments in security studies. Part 2 analyses the root causes for contemporary warfare, the dilemmas and debates over military intervention, and the role played by the UN, NATO and other organizations in maintaining international peace and security. Part 3 assesses the challenges of environmental security, including the threat of resource-based conflict, most notably over oil and water, and the perceived security challenges of international migration. Part 4 discusses the new security challenges posed by international terrorism, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and cyber warfare. It explores the strategies and policies adopted by the United States, particularly in the aftermath of 9/11 and assesses the implications of the rise of China and other emerging powers. This book will be essential reading for students and analysts of international relations, international security and strategic studies.
Christo and Jeanne Claude The Floating Piers
Waterborne: Christo and Jeanne-Claude's Floating Piers on Lake Iseo From June 18 to July 3, 2016, 100 kilometers east of Milan and 200 kilometers west of Venice, thousands of people will walk on water. The Floating Piers by Christo and Jeanne-Claude will deploy 70,000 square meters of shimmering yellow fabric above a modular floating dock system of 220,000 high-density polyethylene cubes to create a temporary, three-kilometer walkway across the surface of Lake Iseo, connecting the mainland to the islands of Monte Isola and San Paolo. The piers will be 16 meters wide and approximately 40 centimeters high, with sloping sides. Visitors will experience the artwork by walking from Sulzano to Monte Isola and over to San Paolo. The mountains surrounding the lake will also offer a bird's-eye view of the project, revealing unnoticed angles and perspectives. The Floating Piers will be Christo and Jeanne-Claude's first large scale project since they realized The Gates in 2005 and will draw upon their established history of projects in Italy, including Wrapped Fountain and Wrapped Medieval Tower in Spoleto, 1968; Wrapped Monuments in Milan, 1970; and The Wall-Wrapped Roman Wall in Rome, 1973-74. As with all of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's projects, The Floating Piers will be funded entirely through the sale of Christo's original works of art. After the 16-day exhibition, all components will be removed and recycled. This book presents rich photographic coverage of The Floating Piers alongside sketches, models, documents and designs, revealing the process behind this waterborne work of art. Incorporating everything from approval procedures to the manufacture of fabric and anchoring elements, it testifies not only to Christo and Jeanne-Claude's unique creative imagination but also to the immense technical, bureaucratic, and logistical feats that allowed the concept to take float.
