Cornélie de Retz Van Loo, a 23-year-old recently divorced socialite, tries to begin a new life in Italy, with mixed feelings. After spending time in Rome, however, she discovers that Italy itself can never bring her the consolation she seeks, and writes a pamphlet on 'The Social Position of the Divorced Woman'. Flouting convention, she moves in with the Dutch painter Duco van der Staal, with only two acquaintances - an amorous Italian prince and the American heiress whom he has married for her money - for company. In desperate financial straits, Cornélie is forced to take a position as companion to an elderly American lady in Nice, where she unexpectedly runs into her ex-husband. Will she be able to resist his continuing power over her?

Celebrating the dark origins of our most American music, Country reveals a wild shadowland of history that encompasses blackface minstrels and yodeling cowboys; honky-tonk hell and rockabilly heaven; medieval myth and musical miscegenation; sex, drugs, murder; and rays of fierce illumination on Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and others, famous and forgotten, whose demonology is America's own. Profusely and superbly illustrated, Country stands as one of the most brilliant explorations of American musical culture ever written.

GOAL This is the funniest book I have ever written - and the ambiguity here is deliberate. Much of this book is about deliberate ambiguity, described as unambiguously as possible, so the previous sentence is probably the fIrst, last, and only deliberately ambiguous sentence in the book. Deliberate ambiguity will be shown to underlie much, if not all, of verbal humor. Some of its forms are simple enough to be perceived as deliberately ambiguous on the surface; in others, the ambiguity results from a deep semantic analysis. Deep semantic analysis is the core of this approach to humor. The book is the fIrst ever application of modem linguistic theory to the study of humor and it puts forward a formal semantic theory of verbal humor. The goal of the theory is to formulate the necessary and sufficient conditions, in purely semantic terms, for a text to be funny. In other words, if a formal semantic analysis of a text yields a certain set of semantic proptrties which the text possesses, then the text is recognized as a joke. As any modem linguistic theory, this semantic theory of humor attempts to match a natural intuitive ability which the native speaker has, in this particular case, the ability to perceive a text as funny, i. e. , to distinguish a joke from a non-joke.

English Language Teaching in its Social Context offers sociolinguistic, ethnographic, and social-psychological perspectives on TESOL teaching and learning and introduces the relevant literature on second language acquisition. Together with its companion volumes, it presents English language teaching in a variety of specific institutional, geographic and cultural contexts. The articles - a range of seminal and specially commissioned pieces - have been carefully chosen to present four major principles of English language teaching: * they focus on the roles played by teachers and learners * recognise the individuality of language learners * support teachers in the provision of active guidance for students' learning * examine both positive and negative patterns of interaction between learners and teachers. This Reader offers people unfamiliar with research in this field an overall impression of English language teaching issues while allowing the more experienced reader the opportunity to relate his or her own experiences to the theories presented.
